Hurricane Season

Living in a hurricane-prone area means that we must be vigilant about keeping our homes and families safe during bad weather. When hurricane season rolls around every June it isn’t the best time to prepare for a storm. The best time is now.

Miracle Windows and Sunrooms works with many homeowners in the Miami-Dade area to strengthen their properties against hurricane-force winds and flying debris. We install quality replacement windows, doors, and home additions that can stand up to the worst weather. Our team also knows how important preparing in other ways is for you and your family. We’ve put together a few ways to start getting ready for hurricane season, so our clients are always ready for the storm.

Prepare Your Home with Hurricane Windows

A hurricane can do a lot of damage to your home through flooding, torn off roofing, and broken glass. One of the best ways to protect your property is by using durable hurricane resistant products on the exterior. We recommend installing strong hurricane windows to keep your home and family safe from flying glass.

These windows are designed to meet Florida’s wind load codes and are very impact resistant. They’ll stand up to small debris and high winds without a problem. Plus, our replacement windows are covered by a transferrable, non-prorated, lifetime warranty.

When you are ready for window installation, we’ll work closely with you throughout the entire process starting with:

  • A complimentary consultation with one of our window contractors
  • A free quote for the installation of your storm windows
  • Custom design of your vinyl windows in any shape, size, or style
  • Custom construction of your windows in our factory
  • Removal of the old windows and repairs to the window opening
  • Installation of the new windows on your home
  • Clean up of the site to leave your property in pristine condition

You may also want to install working shutters over your windows, install storm doors on all entrances, and use a wind-resistant roofing system to give your home more complete protection. If you are caught in a hurricane season on short notice, nail plywood over the windows to keep debris from impacting them.

Create an Emergency Kit & Stock Supplies

Whether you plan on sheltering in place or just want to be prepared for the unexpected, it’s also important to keep well-stocked with supplies. Miracle Windows and Sunrooms suggest getting extra canned goods and water for the pantry. You should have about one gallon of water per person per day and up to seven days of water.

Make sure to put together an emergency kit for each member of the family. This kit should contain essentials for staying warm, healthy, and connected. Consider filling your kits with:

  • A Clean Set of Clothing, Including Socks in a Sealed Plastic Bag
  • An Emergency Blanket
  • A Plastic Rain Poncho
  • Prescription Medications
  • Enough Hygiene Products for Seven Days
  • Stocked First Aid Kit
  • NOAA Weather Radio; Hand Crank or Battery Operated

  • Extra Batteries
  • Flashlight
  • Cell Phone and a Charger
  • Local and State Map
  • Multipurpose Tool
  • Secure File Box with Copies Of ID, Home Deed, and Insurance Info.
  • Enough Cash for a Few Days
  • Enough Fuel for the Car or Generator

Prepare for Evacuation of Your Family

If the hurricane is bad enough, the state may issue an evacuation notice before it arrives. Ideally, you’ll have your emergency kits and extra fuel ready before the evacuation because it will be difficult to get supplies afterward. Always try to keep a quarter tank of gas in your car, so you can leave the city quickly. You may also want to familiarize yourself with the hurricane evacuation route from your home and learn where gas stations are located on it.

When it comes to getting out of the path of a hurricane, planning and mental preparation are key. Create a hurricane evacuation plan with your family. Cover all aspects of the evacuation:

  • Set a designated place to meet up
  • Make sure everyone knows the local evacuation centers
  • Make sure everyone memorizes an emergency contact number
  • Work together to move belongings to the highest level of the home
  • Board or shutter your storm windows
  • Move lawn furniture and outdoor tools inside
  • Shut off water and gas to the home
  • Unplug all electronics
  • Decide which car to take
  • Decide where you will stay; like an out-of-state relative
  • Designate someone to take care of pets on the road
  • Designate someone to grab the emergency kits
  • Bring along three days of food and water

Keeping your family safe during the storm is vital, but you’ll also want to take steps to protect your property this hurricane season.
